The Growing Need for Support in Bakersfield

Bakersfield, California, faces numerous challenges that highlight the urgent need for support, particularly for families with children who have special needs. With a poverty rate of nearly 20%, Bakersfield’s poverty level is significantly higher than the national average of about 12.3%. This financial strain makes it difficult for families to access basic necessities, let alone specialized care for children with disabilities. Additionally, one in five children in Kern County lives in a household that struggles to meet basic needs, compared to the national average of one in six children. Despite these challenges, Bakersfield’s healthcare infrastructure is stretched thin, with a lack of specialists and limited access to resources for children with special needs. The unemployment rate in Bakersfield is also higher than the national average, with 7.7% of the population unemployed, compared to the national rate of 3.9%. This combination of high poverty, limited resources, and lack of access to services makes Bakersfield one of the areas with the greatest need for support, especially for families who often turn to online sources for help that is not readily available locally.
